if you replace the fixed number in the family-types properties, by a formula like: =(Length/1000)+1 Then you have a true easy-scaling line... (you can choose yourself by which number to divide a.k.a. how often repeats you want per unit)

Could you please post a snapshot of where & how to apply the formula in the family-types properties dialog? (are you working in metric system?)
