I'm a student from the Art Institute of Portland in my senior year majoring interior design. Graduating September 2013, I would like to get into design visualization and be a Revit Modeler. This is my first attempt at creating a lighting fixture, this is a nested family. Feel free to provide any feedbacks.

So what is the lighting function you had in mind? Ambient or decorative? As a decorative fixture I think it could work. As an ambient, I think you might have trouble getting as much light from it as your rendering suggests. You would need some other fill light source or an additional up-light element in the fixture for the indirect fill.
By the way, the correct term is "luminaire".
But anyway, very nice. Stay with it. The world needs more and better light.
