Is there a way of grouping a set of objects of different types, and then easily toggling their visibility on and off? I've been using hide/isolate as a means of creating 'cut-away' views, which I guess is probably not what the command was intended for. It would be nice to be able to form a selection set of say, a roof, ceiling, walls, doors and windows, and then be able to turn all of that on and off to facilitate looking inside the model.

I would look into using a Scope Box. This allows you to define a 3D box crop region. You can then drag the extents to adjust the location of the boundary. Nothing outside the boundary is visible. What I usually do is to create a "Working 3D view" so I can manipulate visibility without messing with any of my other 3d view.
