I am trying to place a component I created as a rvt. file but somehow the family became a hosted component. Everytime I try to place it in the model it wants to be placed on a face of another object. When I try to place it without hosting it, it tells me to "switch to placement mode" which I don't know how. The only option I see is placing it in the workplane but this doesn't work as well since my workplane is constantly changing heights. Does anyone know how to switch a component to placement mode? The family was created as a casework and not wall or object based. I am using revit 2008. Thank you

You need to open the family and go to Setting-->Family Category and Parameters and uncheck the "Work Plane Based" box at the bottom of the dialog.

I just did this and have in the past but am getting an error on reload... I suspect theres not way to change the host type for instances already in my model? I have nearly 4000 instances I'd rather not have to go thru and replace....
