the more i work with revit the more things i add to my template file. so projects i started before with less information in their template file, can i overwrite or update the template file they were started with or just add all the new families that i have made and make all the setting changes for those old projects.

I think the project file pulls from the template file only when you first start the project. It's not like a link where files are pulled in dynamically from the template.

Many things can be transferred using [File][Transfer Project Standards...] command in the project you want to update. You must have your template file open in the same Revit session to select it from drop down list that appears. Check all items that you want transferred.

Families are another problem...
