I need to create an area schedule with different categories. I can do a running total for each category but how do i subtract an area (for exempted area) from the gross total?

UNDER THE FEILD TAB DO A CALCULATED FORMULA. WHAT EVER FEILD YOU CREATE IS NAMED ,YOU CAN SET A FORMULA TO SUBTRACT DIFFERENT CATAGORIES FROM EACH OTHER. OR WHAT EVER YOU NEED TO.

I'm a new Revit user so thanks for your help. For the Area schedule, I was also wondering if I create a calculated value under the Field using the 'Yes/No' type, would I be able to write a formula where if the Yes option is checked, the area would be displayed and if the No option is checked, the area would be 0. If you can, what would that formula be?

now you're getting into some fairly complicated formulas. Revit's help tool has a little tutorial on formula syntax... you should take a look at it.
