when inserting a steel beam it comes in as a solid line in plan view. what is the process in which you change it to show up as a center line or dashed line.

have you tried using the linework tool? It basically allows you to change the linetype of objects...

let me ask this, rather than having to pick each line that i need to change for my footer. could i make the footer so when it is inserted that when in plan view it shows up already dashed. i know when you are making certain families you can set the amount of detail you see when in a particular view. but where do you edit the detail view of the wall. i know where to change and add structure to the wall but not detail. all this in order to save time from havong to go back over the footer lines. do you think it could work.

yes, you can do this using object styles. Basically you open up the footer family, assign object styles or subcategories to each family solid and then assign a linetype to that subcategory. When you import it to the project it should show that linetype as long as your object style subcategories in the project match up. Confused yet?? It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it but a little hard to explain...
It's pretty involved so I suggest you look it up in the help menu. Open up your help and click the index tab. Type "object styles" in the keyword box and select "object styles command"
hope that helps!

Here is another way, if you use a sweep to create your footer in a foundation wall type, it works nicly, can you change that wall type to have dashed lines in elevation? As well as in plan?
