I believe I found a bug with Revit 2008 & a way to work around it. I was creating a new family for an interior beam and I tried to draw in (2) symbolic lines that cross to represent the beam being cut through. I couldn't get it to show up in any sections even though the symbolic lines from other beams were showing up. To make a long story short... here's what I found out... If you click on "symbolic lines" to draw lines in a family and the dialog box asking "Pick a Plane" comes up, revit will draw in model lines which will not show up in your drawing. What I had to do was draw the lines once, erase them and draw them again. The second time I drew them, revit assumed I was working off of the same reference plan. The line remain a symbolic line and worked in my sections. I even did the "Pick a Plane" on one of the lines and not the other. Only the other was showing up in my sections. I found this interesting after pulling my hair out for a couple hours. I hope this helps anybody having the same problem I did. Mike

Excellent. Nice work around discovery. There are many a glitch in 2008 and the workarounds are a great help. Thank you.

This has been around for quite a while. I have actually come accross this with other symbolic elements (i.e. masking regions) for some reason it thinks it needs a plane because it switches to model mode and then freaks out because a masking region is symbolic... Go figure. Just follow the symboic line workaround and Revit will reset itself to symbolic elements and draw on. Nick

I found this problem a while ago and have even reported it as a bug to Autodesk - even got a phone call from a support person! It was around a long time before 2008 was released. I noticed that when you're asked to select the work plane, the button you pressed to select Symbolic Lines is no longer high-lighted. If you click on this button again you can draw symbolic lines without needing to first draw model lines and then delete them - hope this helps, and I hope they fix it sometime soon.

The problem is still the same in 2010 version. Thanks for the workaround!
