I am new to rendering in Revit Architecture 2008. I am attempting to render an interior space that has ceiling mounted recessed cans and wallwashers as well as soffit mounted linear uplights in 24" and 48" lengths. For some unknown reason the linear uplights don't seem to be working at all (yes, I checked to see if they are switched on). When I run a radiosity solution the only lights that show up are the downlights. I even tried copying a few of the linear uplights into the middle of a room to ensure that they are not trapped within walls or ceilings. Does anyone know the trick to working these darned light?

It's really hard to tell what your problems may be. Who built the light families? Do they really work? ARe the lights really model elements or just symbols.

WWHUB, Thanks for responding. You pose reasonable questions. The lights in question are the "Uplight-Strip:24" and "Uplight-strip:48" from Revit so I'm assuming that they've been built correctly and should work. I also tried using the "Suspended Linear 1:48" from Revit and got the same result .... zilch. John

I would suggest that you first check out your process to verify that you are doing things correctly. Try opening a blank drawing and insert your light on a generic - no thickness ceiling. Render that with your sun off and see if the light is there. (Use region raytrace with just a clipped area and low resolution. Don't use radiosity and change your viewpoint from above and below the ceiling. You might even play with some other light sources and ceilings so you understand the process.

Thanks for the suggestion. I created a fresh new drawing and created a room with four walls, a floor, a ceiling, a soffit/light shelf, a strip uplight and strip downlight light and a of floor lamp. The two strip lights are free floating in the space just above and below the light shelf. I created two scenes. One has all the lights turned on. The other has only the strip lights turned on. Have a look at the attached raster images for the results. What do you think?

Here is an image with a few more lights including some suspended linear lights, a down light and a wall washer. For some reason none of the linear lights seem to do anything at all.

You've got some bad families and it appears they come thay way from REVIT. If you open the family and look at the "bulb" around the light source, it is not transparent and it has to be. You need to correct the materials in these bad families. I would set them to the same material as is in the families that work. You can do this at the project level by changing the materials there. On the uplight, the material is glass-white high luminance - change that material to transparent and the light should work.

WWHUB, I am also a novice in revit rendering. I am having the same problem with the same type of light. I can't seem to find a transparent material. Any suggestions?
