is this normal, i have made a template file and at present it stands at 3.2mb with no information in it yet. is this normal?

Yes, that's pretty normal. I think my template file is around 4Mb. The file that i'm working in right now is around 87 and growing...

thanks does revit handle the large files ok, as i know i have drawings i have done in AutoCAD at over 20mb and it gets a little 'slow'

Some times, for some operations, Revit does slow down a little. The main place i notice it is when saving -- it can take a full five or six minutes to save a file, which makes it tempting to wait until the end of the day to save... (which, of course, never works out well...)
