I've read a couple of threads of others having similar problems to mine, but have not yet seen a clear answer on how to remedy the problem. I'm trying to place plywood as a detail component in a section view. The hatch for the plywood comes out correctly horizontally, but not vertically. I know that the program is capable of orienting the hatch the correct way because my wall and roof types both contain plywood as a sheathing layer and the hatch for them is oriented properly (vertically for the wall and at an angle for the roof). How do I get it to work for my detail components?

You either need to make a 90 degree plywood hatch or create a model plywood hatch that you can rotate. A model pattern must have the line ;%TYPE=MODEL in its file right after its name. You can edit your pat file to add this line then reload it as a model fill.
