Dear All, is it possible in Revit: i'm trying to design a family of electical electrical fixtures with replacable elements. Say i have a fixture frame consisting of 1 to 5 holes. The content of the holes should vary: eg. single, double, tripple switch, socket, doobel switch, dimmer, presence sensor and so on. Imho, the logical way is to design a frame with replacable elements in instance level (like it's done in curtain wall). Is it possible? Any how-to?

One way you could achieve this is to set up some Yes/No parameters and attach them to the visibility parameter of each item. You can do this by selecting the desired item in the family and going to properties and selecting the little button on the far right of the visibility line. Select Add parameter and create a visibility parameter as an instance. Then in the project you will see some check mark boxes associated with the parameters you made. you can uncheck the desired boxes and it will remove those items from that instance of the family. You could also set these parameters as type parameters and switch out different types for different situations. There are way to add formulas to the visibility parameters, but i am not familiar with the syntax. HTH

" well, having 3 placeholders and aproximatelly 10 items to fit, i roughly get (3^10)/2 variants (afair). Having 5 placeholders gives me (5^10)/2 variants. I hope there is other way.

That is true. Probably your best solution is to figure out what combos are always going to be the same and make seperate families of them and what is left over you could do the instance parameter thing. I am not sure of all the circumstances, but it sounds like a very complex family(s) any way you go about it.

" actually, http://www.jung.de/s/22_815/page/content/flashsheet/intro_big.php shows one of possibilities - hotel access card, double switch and outlet in vertical frame. A quick hack was using is to place separate enitities for frame and fill. The problem is they should be placed in exact distance one after another, and it's a work for computer, not for the human
