I found a similar post, but I don't believe that I can find an answer to my specific question. In one view we may have exterior, interior, special case dimensions. We would like to be able to control the visibility of each of these categories in subsequent views. Is there a way to separate the different dimension types so that we don't have to individually select the dimension strings and override their visibility settings for each view? Is there a way to setup different dimension categories? We are using Revit Architecture 2008 build 20070810_1700. Thanks, in advance.

Annotations such as dimensions are view specific and as such if you don't want the dimension in the view simply delete it.If you are talking about different types of display values (text size, tick marks etc.) for different dimension types (i.e. Grids vs. casework) then define different dimension styles for each type.

I guess what we are trying to do is this for example. You have a view of your floor plan that has all the exterior grids, exterior building dimensions, interior dimensions etc. You then duplicate this view for use as say a finish floor plan where you want to only show dimensions for your carpet patterns and other finishes. I would like a way to quickly turn off via visibility settings "categories" for different dimensions. We have Interior Designers with our firm that don't need to be filtering all of the dimensions by manually picking this or that dimension and overriding the display settings for the dimension string. If they turn the visibility settings off for dimension strings, their dimensions aren't visible either. This was handled nicely with layers in Arch Desktop, but a neat solution isn't evident in Revit Arch 2008.

There is no need to 'filter' dimensions in the newly created duplicate view. If you do not want the dimension to display, simply delete it as it does not delete the other dimensions placed in other views. Of course if yu use the duplicated as dependant option then this is not the case, but then if you are using this option is that the right methodolgy to support your workflow?
