Start out by drawing a wall (curtain wall 1). Look at the wall in elevation (helps to have shading with edges turned on). Use the "Modeling" curtain grid tool to divide your curtain wall up. Use the mullion tool to add mullions. To change a panel to solid, doors etc you need to select the panel (hold the cursor close and tab until you find it). Go to properties, load a new type. Load the Double-Glass 1.rfa, Double-Glass 2.rfa, etc (only some of the door familes work as curatin wall doors...). Then select this as the panel type. You can also create and modify the door or infill families this way.

BTW ignore the tutorials on how to draw a curtain wall. I find that way to be more of a pain than anything else.

By the way I no longer use the actual curtain wall doors. The main reason is that you cannot access the height and width parameters to use in formulas, etc. Which means that our schedules and exiting do not work with curtain wall doors.

The way that works the best is

- create a curatin wall

- divide it using the curtain grids

- place mullions

- find the panel that you want to be a door

- change that panel to a generic wall

- host a door like normal

I actually created special doors for this case. The height and width are instance parameters and there is no frame (we use the mullions instead).

The curtain wall doors work well for schematic, but as soon as you start documenting you will run into issues....

therevitkid.com just posted a tutorial on curtain wall doors. Touches on the basics.

Quoting jarosa from 2009-03-21 16:12:11"therevitkid.com just posted a tutorial on curtain wall doors. Touches on the basics."

The tutorial basically explains the method that I use to use (post 2). However this does not address schedules and access to the parameters within a curatin wall door. The issue is that a curtain wall door is somewhere between a door and a curtain wall panel. Curtain wall panels automatically adjust and thus the height and width parameters are set to system variables and not accessible by the user.

I have no issue using curtain wall doors (which have been available out of the box since at least 8.1) for schematic design, student work and the like. However they do not work for full construction documents, unless you want to place opaque text over your schedules...

Just my two cents...

Nick
