I understand how 2D & 3D grids work. I've gotten into an existing project and am unable to set grids from 2D to 3D. The 2D symbol appears black not blue when the grid is highlighted, and the Reset to 3D option on right click is greyed out. How do I get back to 3D grids, please? Thanks. -Barney

Solved: If the end of the grid (or any datum, actually) lies outside the model crop region you are not allowed to change 2D extent to 3D. That's documented in RA 2008 User’s Guide, para on “Resizing Datum Extent Controls.” Solution is to temporarily turn off the crop region, make your extent change, and turn the crop back on.
