I use Revit MEP 2008, I am designing Technology/communications systems and could use some help with family categories. For example: I have wall-mounted security cameras and Ceiling mounted security cameras, as well as walll-mounted speakers and ceiling mounted  speakers, etc. The architect for ceiling plan coordination purposes wants to be able to turn off everything accept ceiling mounted devices. My problem is there are not enough family categories to separate all of my devices and you cannot add a category either. all my cameras, motion detectors, door contacts, etc are on the security family type. Is there any other way to separate them so the architect can simply turn off and on the different groups they want to see?

Add linetypes to your families as a subcategory..... Security/Clg-? ... Security/Wall-? etc.   You can then switch those on/off independently using VG.

I do this for my door thresholds.

So you draw the object with ,lets say a camera-wall line type and one with camera-ceiling line type and those should be able to turn on and off separately?

In the family editor, you can add sub-categories under settings/object styles.
