We recently had a problem in our office where the local project file would return the message 'can't edit the element, element was deleted in central file'. We would get a similar message when trying to save.

Our first inclination was to audit and save the central file but the same messages would appear. To resolve the problem, we took the most recently saved local file and made it the new central file. Everything is working properly now but does anyone have an idea what may have caused this problem?

My only guess is that someone accidentally got into the central file, deleted the object and saved the file. The way you resolved it was exactly how I would have done it.

We get this message often and it is usually because one person is trying to select an item that someone else has already deleted. It happens most often when someone has not reloaded latest in a while or someone hasn't saved to central in a while.

If you can't save to central and have reloaded latest and it still doesn't work have everyone who is in the model 'relinquish all mine' from the File pulldown and then STC. That almost always works. The only situation where it hasn't worked is if somebody closed without relinquishing, then you need to have that person open their local file and save to central.

While we have followed the Revit worksharing suggestion that STC and reload latest be done hourly when worksharing, we have found that we need to do even more often. It helps everybody to avoid worksharing conflicts if the whole team remains diligent about saving and reloading at frequent intervals.
