Create componante in place, then use a sweep with a profile of the beam.

Basic Tab -> Component   then up on Properties tool bar click "Create In Place"  Then choose what family category you want it in, probably "Structural Framing."   Then click "Solid Form" -> Solid Sweep.  Draw the curve that you want by either sketching the 2D path or picking  a path.  Then load the profile of the beam from the library "Load Prifile"  and finish the family.

I am running into the same problem with Revit architecture 2009. It kept saying "the family is not of the correct category". manifertal, how did you figure it out?

thanks,
