Version: Revit Architecture 2008. Hi all, am a newbie. Actually, been 3 days. Anyway, I have tried looking into the Door Family Template, but to no avail, that I am not proficient enough (yet) to manipulate all the contraints to make it work... All I need is a Dutch Door with the height of the panel being adjustable (while the frame stay where it is...) Why can't I find it anywhere... Can anyone help? Thanks, -whitex

You probably won't lke my answer but you should do the family tutorials right away. If you can't make families you might as well not use revit.

Remember you can always draw exactly what you want at first with NO parameters at all while you are learning but still need to put in a door that looks the way you want. Basically just get the wall opening and a solid panel, then use symbol lines in elevation and plan to make it look how you want.

Revit's doors are very crude in my opinion. The standard ones that come out of the box just cut a hole in the wall the exact size of the door and then surface apply some thin 3" trim on each side of the wall to simulate a frame. That means when you render or even view in 3D, you see the wall texture (if it is masonry) in the jamb of the door behind the trim. I have to go in to the door family, click on the line in plan that represents the wall opening, edit it so that the cutout is 2" wider than the door (for a hollow metal frame), and then create a sweep that is the profile of the standard 2x5-3/4 HM Steel Frame. There is also no hardware on the door, so you will have to add it to the door if you want a realistic rendering or 3D view. Don't forget to select "Visibility" for any of these objects and delete the box that makes it appear in plan. The default will have your hardware, your Dutch Door Shelf, whatever you create, appearing in the plan which you don't want. Good luck.

thank you very much, hogmodo. and i agree. the doors family that comes with the package is a bit "crude". much like ADT objects. i am actually in the process of making custom opening families, too because the standard openings, seems to me, only has rectangular shapes. but thanks for the dutch~!

I completly disagree with the statement "If you can't make families you might as well not use revit." I have been using Revit since version 6 and have only since release 8 became comftrable with making families and even then I dont like touching door or window families. The power of Revit is not inside its ability to make familes and create anything to any level of detail that you want. I think that familes are one of the more difficult things to grasp in the program. I still havnt figured out how to get some of my familes to work consistently. I.e. I still have troubles making something that changes angles, no matter if it is a door swing in 3D, window louver, or a canopy roof that I want to have a parametric slope.

Thats amazing to me, I can't imagine what kind of building can be made from revit without custom families. Even a hollow metal door doesn't come with revit so even the most basic commercial architecture must have some custom families, unless your just drafting over your views, which is fine too. The first project I ever worked in in Revit needed kawneer 451 aluminum windows of various types. I had to learn to make them. I haven't worked on or know anyone who completed a project in revit without making custom content. Back to the dutch door. did you look through the metric content available from the Web Library link in the file open dialog box. They have some incredible families.
