I own a 3d laser scanner and would like to know if anyone has utlized a scanner to gather as-built data for their BIM/REVIT projects.

What kind of scanner do you own. I was thinking of buying one. I know that the scanners that Leica offers don't currently go directly into Revit. You get CAD dwg which one can draw over in Revit to produce a model.

i look itto this may 6 to 8 months ago and most would only make a dwg model. but u can just insert the 3d dwg into a mass family. can be good for refurbs in churchs ect where you need the detailing.

I sold my scanner last year (a Leica HDS3000). The yearly maintenance/warranty costs were too much. My 3dpointcloud site is now off and I have just gone back to using my original site www.aeronautica3d.com for all my work/projects. It is not up to date with all my pic files though. But see here: www.aeronautica3d.com/cas1.html and www.aeronautica3d.com/TI.html. I will start using the Leica Disto A6 meters on a azimuth/compass step motor ring to do scanning. I use RapidformXOR and RapidformXOS/2006 to do the pointcloud manipulations and I am now using Catia as the main software to provide drawings and other end product of 2d and 3d. I have been learning Catia since last November. I am also outsourcing work to overseas Catia workers to expeditite the completion of models in a more timely fashion. I recently learned that there are architects using Catia, so this could go well at getting some of the reverse engineering work when the need for a scanner is required. I now will rent scanners as needed. Lowest rate found was 300/day. 30 M range though. Wendell

We are using a faro photon 120 to capture the geometry of the buildings. In the beginning we had a hard time with the new workflow but finally it works out pretty well. Challenging was the transfer of the point cloud to Revit but we found a good solution.

With the new point cloud feature in revit, I've got stars in my eyes about the abilities to map swaths of town, and get detailed as-builts for renovations.
Problem is, I'm having a lot of trouble finding straight answers online about laser scanners. All manufacturers require personal interaction for a price quote, and I'm in more of an exploratory mode... not even sure what I'm looking for.
So what are some good ways to GET point cloud data? Renting a unit isnt an option since I doubt anyone would be willing to ship off an expensive and fragile box of glass, lasers, and electronics to Alaska. Our consultants are generally trailing us technologically so we can't hope for favors like this. Are there any affordable options for a true laser scanner? Or are there software-based options that compile images? Even a mediocre set of points would probably dwarf our efforts to model sites with a combination of single point laser measurements and google earth guesswork.

Hello,
we got a video tutorial concerning the discussed matter that helps you answer some of the questions asked
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=No_1pj0a25Y
This video tutorial shows you how to use laser scanning data in Autodesk Revit (Scan to BIM). Laser scanning data (point cloud) were automatically generated with the laser scanning software Point-Cab.

I also went on to use PointCab a while ago...I must admit that it has a lot of benefits when working with point cloud data! are there any updates in sight?
