Pete,
there are a variety of things that could be causing this... does it do the thing if you load it in another project?

There's most likely something going on with the family itself then. Perhaps you could email it to me and I'll see if I can locate the problem...

You need to add a dimension between the reference plane at the face of the wall and the reference plane that your void axis is connected to. What is happening is that when you insert your family into the project, the voids don't know how far from the wall face they are supposed to be and who knows where they end up. But if you dimension the reference planes, the voids know exactly where to be. It is a good idea to always dimension everything in your families.
I don't know if you knew this or not, but using the "family types" tool in the family editor you can create families that can change sizes based on user input or have preset sizes. That way you don't have to make a 7" pilaster and a separate 9" pilaster family. You can just have the pilaster family and change the width to 9" inside the project and it will update.

one dim was all it was. hard to believe that i get so caught up in how complex revit is and all it can do that i forget that it can also be very unforgiving if you miss something.
i made a seperate family for 7 and 9 in pilasters with flutes is because there was so much changing with trim size, base hgt, flute spacing and trim styles, the only thing that was the constant for me was the hgt. so the adjustment for that was through the middle since top and bottom were the same for the width of eaah pilaster once established. also, i do have some families of windows and doors where they have multiple parameters to get different configurations from one family.
thanks again
Pete
