I'm trying to set up a door hardware schedule by creating a nested family within a door family. How does shared parameter work in this case? Do they need to be loaded into the nested family then loaded into the door family and then load the door family into the project file? Thanks, I'd appreciate any input.

In settings-->family category and parameters of the family to be nested (the door hardware) check the shared option. This enables this family to be scheduled as a separate item to the door. HTH.
