Any ideas as to why the ceiling grid would run through the light fixtures? I am working on a school that has a lot of ceilings and lights being demolished. The demo lights show up fine in the demo ceilings. However, when I switch to new construction, the new grid ceiling goes right through the new lights. Also, the lights don't seem to display correctly. They show up differently on the rcp than if i insert them into the legend. Any ideas or tutorials I could look at?

Be sure that you change the view to new contruction AND change it from 'Show All' to 'Show Complete' Beyond that there may be some issues with the light fixture family. Is t a standard family that ships with Revit or something that was downloaded? Issues with the RCP vs the legend. Be sure you set the View Properties of the Legend View to reflect what you want it to show. Sometimes there are extraneous symbols in the family that will show up in a legend view. Check the light family if you need to and make some adjustments so it looks how you want it to. A good start would be turning off Ceilings in the Legend View. HTH.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

On the new ceiling grid I insert any of the suspended linear fixtures, and the grid goes right through it. The grid cuts at other fixtures, just not these. I don't know if it's a problem with the grid or just with the specific type of fixtures. There are 3 different suspended linear fixtures in my project. 2 from Revit and 1 which is my adaption to the ones included in revit.

And it won't cut at any of the 3? Would you be able to post the light fixtures to let us look at them (or at least your adaptation one and tell us which ones in the Revit library are giving you problems)? Also, last ditch effort; check to make sure your fill pattern for your ceiling material is a Model Pattern and not a Drafting Pattern. This doesn't explain why it's cutting in some places, but not others, but it's worth a shot.

Thank you for trying to help. First off - The lighting fixture is the suspended linear fixture from REVIT. It does not remove the ceiling pattern where it is in any type of ceiling. The other fixtures (i.e. troffer, pendant, etc.) do not show the ceiling through them. Is it perhaps because the suspended linear light fixture is suspended by two posts, so would not cut the ceiling? I also wondered if it had to do with the phasing and/or worksets. I'm new to this Revit program but a very fast learner. I have attached all three fixtures. I created the 3rd one. Thank you again!

Heheh.. I too am a very fast learner. With over 10 years experience in 3d modeling and 5 years in Revit (only 3 Professionally) and I'm still bewildered by how much I have left to learn. Welcome to the world of designing instead of drawing though! I will take a look at these tonight if I get a chance. What version are you using?

You may have already figured it out, but the out of the box pendant light fixtures from Revit don't hide the ceiling grid beyond. You have to edit the light fixture family, and in the ceiling view, I added a mask region to the existing 2d line work. Then reload the family into your Revit file, and it should work.

I am having a similar problem- my recessed lights do not cut through the ceiling - you can see in the 3D views
Also this light has no IES available- how do I get this to emit light?
I am using revit 2017

Do you own the ceiling or is it a linked file? A face based family will not cut a hole in a linked ceiling.
I did not open the light family but here are some thoughts. Some light families do not cut a whole in their host (if they are hosted at all). Not all light families light. Even when they do, you may only see the lighted objects the light is cast on but the light itself may not show, it has to be built with a self-illumination material. Lights only show in rendered views and only when they are turned on.

the ceiling is not a linked file it is just a ceiling grid I drew in my model- I think I can figure the emitting light problem later but the cutting through the ceiling has me stumped - I have edited the family and checked the box that says cuts voids when loaded. What am I missing?

We don't draw ceiling grids. We assign a material to the ceiling that includes grids. Your lights will never cut your lines.

I'm sorry for the bad termonology I did not draw my ceiling grids- i just made a ceiling and applied the 2x2 grid material to it.

Standard process is to define a ceiling that has the material in the ceiling definition, not applied afterwards. Either way, if your light is not cutting the ceiling and IF the light is hosted by the ceiling, then your likght was never built with a void to cut the ceiling. The void must be in the ceiling family and set to cut the host.
