Hi all, I have been following along in the tutorials on how to create my first family and I used the existing door template to start my family. I need to create doors with a recessed frame. The existing Revit doors in the family have a trim around the edge. I have found two issues after loading the family into my project. The first is there is a constrait attached to the centerline of the door, that i am unable to find. I locked the frame of the door to the exterior reference plane, when i created the family. however, it doesn't seem to be responding to that. secondly, my door swing symbol line seems to be unattached to the door itself. i might have missed something there as far as locking it to a reference plane. I have attached plan images of the door in a 5 inch wall and an 8 inch wall. Any help would be great! I am so close to creating my first family, i'm eager to get it right. thanks.

I have often had problems building window and door families in-place in relation to the wall because I had trouble referencing the right planes. My solution has been to add a reference plane away from the face of the wall and build the family in reference to that. By doing this, you can also change the setback of the frame from the face of the wall (Very useful for HM frames in masonry) or just move the reference plane back to the wall face & everything moves with it.

i have a few questions before i try to do this... should i add the reference plane in the family? or in the project? is the door still hosted to the wall? last question: do you know of any tutorials that walk through family creation besides the ones provided in the help manual? thanks for you help. I am getting to a plateau without being able to customize parts and pieces for our projects. Any advice would help.

Some good tutorials: http://www.caddigest.com/subjects/revit/tutorials.htm Specifically doors for beginners: http://revitbeginners.blogspot.com/2006/04/door-window-tips.html You can create as many reference lines / planes in your family as you need to. They will not show up in your project. If you are using a wall based template when you build your family, the door will be wall based .... even if you build it to be way outside of your wall. REVIT doesn't care where it is, only where it is hosted (inserted) in the wall.

maybe i am not getting this... i thought that i had to build my door family within a wall based template. I was using a wall based template for my door. However, when i flexed the door and the wall within the family file, the door moved as i wished. aligned to the exterior. are you suggesting that i make a door family that is NOT wall based? if so, how does revit know to put the door into the wall? sorry. i am confused. i will try looking at the links you provided. thank you for your help.

I was only answering your question "... is the door still hosted to the wall?" You do want to use the door template and the result will be a wall hosted entity but ... you always have options. You could build a door that is not wall based - cut the opening in the wall using one of several methods then put your door in that opening. NOTE: I'm not saying that you should do this ... only saying you have many options. You will only recognize the power of the program if you understand how it works.
