our Office recently started using Revit - switched from ACAD ADT. Weve already taken the initial three day course. We can hold our own for now but we're having trouble figuring out when we should, and should not, constrain elements. When I started, I didnt constrain enough. And know Ive overcompensated and every thing I try to do, I get the circular reference error message. Can anybody tell me when I should constrain and element or dimension and when not?

I you talking about a family or a project? In a project the only things i constrain on the grids and columns and walls that align with the grids. In a family constrain elements to reference planes and should be right.
