Hi I'm still trying to get my head around visibility settings in Revit. Please see attached file. I created the 4 pilecap foundation family & I am confused as to why certain elements down show up in certain views: 1. In an elevation with shading on, the pilecap doesn't display. It does in all other settings. Why is that? 2. In Level 1 the pilecap is still visible even though it's well below it. I've tried turning off the pilecap in the visibility dialog & amending the view range, but to no avail. How do I get it to only display the piles as cut? 3. When in elevation I'd like show the pile penetrating into the pilecap. I tried using Hidden cut symbolic line in the front elevation, but these appear in the 3d view. What am I doing wrong? 4. In a plan the piles were set to Hidden Projection. The appears almost continuous at a scale of 1:00, but looks OK at 1:20. Is there a way to get it to look dashed at both scales? I don't understand why it's doesn't scale the linetype like it does for hatching & annotations. There's a lot there, I hope you can help with some. Thanks Dave F.

You had a combination of two things that needed adjustment. When you create a family, the level that is in the family should be your base. Then when you import your component into Revit, you should be placing it on the level you are working in (Level 1 in your instance). The base level will dictate where it is placed in your project as far as elevation is concerned. From that point your view range came into play. Usually, the 2 lower boxes in the view range display are usually set at 0 and left there. The cut plane and the top of the view range have positive numbers, usually having the cut plane around half of the top view range. Cut range can be equal, but if you go higher, then an error pops up. These are general guidelines though. It all depends on your project and some of the view in them. There will be some instances where your view range will obviously change. Hope this works for you.

If i understand you correctly I can't have the Ref Layer at the bottom as the piles lengths will vary. I've been given the answer to 3. - I was using model lines instead of symbolic. Doh!With 4. I've been told that I have to use overrides to change to a different linetype in the 1:20 view. Still don't understand why it's doesn't scale the linetype. Cheers Dave F.
