I am trying to tweak the standard residential stairs to show a middle steel stringer and precast concrete tread construction. Two difficulties occur:
1) the stringers stop at the treads, and don't extend up/down to the landings
2) the landings take on the thickness of the treads, which is too thin.
I think I can add a parameter to the stair family to allow definition of the landing depth, but is there an easier way to deal with the stringer (or another family component that would do the trick better)?
See attached file for reference

I have heard from good sources that the next version of Revit will have much better stair creation tools.
Personally,
The landings i would ignore and simply create a floor to cleanup this area, you may also need to add a custom built slab edge to demonstrate the stringer trimming with the landing.
There is no way to add parameters to system families like stairs.

Thanks, Mr. Spot! It really helps to know what you -can't- do, as well. I will attack the problem as you suggested, and update this thread if any other work-arounds come about.
