There is no way of telling, from your post, what straight line you are talking about. Are you editing an extrusion, a symbolic lines .... maybe it is the opening cut? When you select it, what does it say it is?

Revit 2016 - Curious if this has ever been resolved or any further ideas. I too have had this problem. I am editing a annotation family and can't delete some lines.

I used the existing north arrow and tried to modify it to create a new one. I ended up using the generic annotation which is a blank start.

I have two stcok north arrows and since you did not ask a clear question, I took the time to load each and I could delete all linework. So I still don't understand your question. Obviously "existing north arrow" is only existing to you.
In the future, please be clear and provide as much information as possible so we can answer.

Are they not part of the family or the group?

I have the same problem. I was trying to modify a fixed rectangle window to an ached wndow. Apparently I am able to delete the extrusion line at the top to change it to an arc line. I just could not do the same to the sketch line (Modify > Opening cut > Edit Boundary). Please advise. Usng Revit 2017.

Opening cuts are all rectangles only. If you need a different shape, you need to delete the opening cut and create a void using a sketch to cut the wall. Be carefule here so that you cut the wall and not your element.
