I have some users which are in managerial roles and only need to see the progress of work and maybe make a print or two. These users are very basic users and I do not want them messing around in the live model. Therefore, I have set up our network license (Revit Bldg 9.1 and Structure 4) so that these users are not allowed a license. This causes Revit to run in demo mode when opened. Therefore, they can maka a local copy of the central file and rename it. Then they can open it and print or mess around all they want without being able to save. Has anyone else set up Revit this way and if so, what are your findings, both positive and negative? If you are not set up this way, how are you handling this situation? Thanks

1) Unless you suspect they may try to gain access to a network license after you install Revit, why not just install a demo license on their workstations and not worry about setting up who should not acces the license? 2) Do they have to use Revit? Even large corporations (IE: Forest City Enterprises) are using DWFs for progress review and markup. This is especially recommended if you're running a buzzsaw account. 3) In our office I have installed Revit Demos just for viewing and printing purposes (it eventually turned into a floating license) and it worked fine excepting the annoying "THIS IS A DEMO VERSION" notification that would come up occasionally. Prints and review worked just as in the Full Version. HTH.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

I wanted to do it this way so that I can send out my standard deployment with network file locations already set, using SMS. Then anyone that wants Revit can install it with the correct settings, with no intervention from IT. However, only the ones that have received training will be in the include group in the license file, thereby giving them write access. As for the DWF's, if a manager would like to see the progress on a particular project, he will have to rely on someone on the project team to create an updated DWF. Since it is inevitable that one day a PM will want access and no one will be around to create an updated DWF. Therefore, I figured the best approach would be what I am trying. Otherwise, I would have to put the continual creation of DWF's on the project team, and given their already demanding workload, this allows me to give access to the latest model anytime anyone would like. Thanks for the response.
