I run into a problem every time I upgrade to a new version of Revit where I loose all the materials that I had created for previous projects. I am saving the new materials I create under the User material library. Is there an easy way to import the older version of the users material library into the new upgraded versions of Revit. For instance when we upgraded from 8 to 9 I lost all the old brick and stone colors that I had custom created because they were saved in the User material library. So when I went to render a project in 9 that was created in 8 all the materials came up as the gray default. Am I created materials the wrong way? Saving them in the wrong place?

The default location for the user.mlib file is:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit Building 9.1\Rendering\AccuRenderRedist\SUPPORT

You can simply move the ol user.mlib to the new version of Revit's rendering support path.

Better yet, add your own location for your custom libraries in the options pert of Revit.

Also, be sure to check out www.accustudio.com for more Accurender information and libraries.

I guess I am confused. When you upgrade from say 8 to 9 then, does the upgrade not automatically go through and pull in the old user library? Is that something I need to save before I do the upgrade?

So I would be saving my older version User Library (mlib file) and then adding that path in the newer version of revit?

What I would like to create is a library that holds all the user created  materials  i.e. Specific Brick and colors used for each of our projects. I would like to order the new library by our project numbers so if ever need to go in and change something I can just tell it to go to the job numbers material library. Where as now, once you open an old file... You have to go back in and re-assign a brick jpeg to the wall or a certain color to a wall... Is this making sense haha.. I am trying to explain it the best I can.

..."What I would like to create is a library that holds all the user created  materials"

That is exactly what you should be doing for every project.  The material library is a local library.  If multiple people are working on a project, each will see it according to their own library unless you have each material use a project library.

So for each project I need to:

  1. Create a new Material Library
  2. Save that library in the project number
  3. Direct revit to use that library by telling it the path

Or

I just have a "MAIN" User Material Library that has sub-folders ordered by project number that hold all of the specific jpegs or colors for a project.

Those are the two choices? Is that what you are saying?
