Profiles seem not to behave like the other components by simply dropping them into the model. Revit has a square wood column and I'd like to run crown, basecap and base molding around it. Do I have to go into families for that? Thanks.

Profiles are host based and are typically used on walls as well as roof and floor edges.  Regrettably, you can not use them on other entities like columns.  You should look at modifying your column family to include the moldings.

You can import your profile into your column family and use it for your sweep to make your mouldings. When you select sweep, at the top of the screen, it will say "by sketch" or you can select the down arrow and pick your profile or you could also pick "load profile" of course.

you can also just make your profiles right inside of your family during the sweep command.

there are a couple different types of profiles, I usually just use the standard one. Others you can use to your advantage like Hub said. you technically could use the profiles for an in-place family sweep around your column, but it would be to your advantage to modify the column family to have for other projects

Thanks again. Following the advice, I created a new column family based on the existing one and added the profile with a solid sweep command. That was great - I think I am going to dig Revit. My new problem is that my drawn profile is a far cry from the actual industry standard. I went and found a basecap profile in dxf format. I have to learn now how to create a profile based on a dxf import and then apply it with the seep command. Thanks for being a great community.Florin
