I'm having trouble loading detail components that have type catalogs associated with them (and those that don't occasionally also).  Here's one scenario:

I have a 2X4 and a 2X6 detail component loaded (dimensional lumber).  I need a 2X8.  It was originally in our office template, but has been purged from the project.  When I go to load the detail component, using the type catalog, all appears to work as usual, but when I go to insert the new 2X8 detail component, it is not in the pull-down list.

The only work-around we have found is to open the detail component file, draw a line, erase that line, resave the file and overwrite the original.  Then it will load just fine.  Problem with this is that we try to make all "out of the box" data as READ ONLY and you can see the problem with that.

Any advice?

Please research the REVIT help on "Type Catalogs".  Yon need to modify a simple text file.

Thank you WWHub for your reply.  I am familiar with locating (the hardest task :-) ), opening, modifying, and using the Type Catalog txt files, but this does not appear to be where my problem is (unless there is something I am missing).  My problem is that the particular detail component family is not loading into my file.  I cannot even load it into a NEW file using our current office template.  The best luck I've had was by finding the particular thing I needed (detail component, family, etc) in another file any copy-clipping to my project.

 Any other ideas out there?

I've had similar problems with other family types.  I'm not sure I understand why the problems exist but the best I can figure is that components that already exist in the project may have some different parameters than those you are trying to load.  When I've come across that problem, I either deleted all of the offending components and the the family or as an easier fix... rename the base family in your project then reload the good family.

In your case, rename "Nominal Cut Lumber" to ??? "Old NC Lumber" and then reload "nominal cut lumber".  If you want to clean up your file, reassign each existing 2x to the new 2x then you can delete the old family.  Or - if you have too many instances, just leave both families in the file.

Yet another good suggestion and we can try it on a case by case basis, but I believe all of our projects have experienced similar problems and I am wondering if it is a problem with our template???  Are there any potential/known problems that could be causing this phenomenon?

Just to clarify your problem, are you trying to load the whole family?  If you typically do, then someone must have purged unused.

With most "typed" families, I don't believe you can reload the whole catalog when some families are already in use.  Did you try to just load the missing component?I don't load the whole catalog on most of these ... just the ones I need.

When there is a type catalog associated with the family, we just load the specific one that is needed.  But to be clear, sometimes this problem occurs with plain vanilla families.

To address the first part of your reply, yes, there was a 2X8 detail component in the project, but it was unused.  Someone ran the PURGE UNUSED tool and got rid of it.  Now we need it back and have the problem we are discussing while trying to load it.  Is there a known problem with this procedure?
