Is there some way to change the setting in plan so that structural beams, girders, etc. are displayed with their acutal width, rather than a center line representing them? should i not use the structural tool to build them? must i change a setting in the imperial library?

Change the detail level in the View properties dialog box to fine. Your beam should show up then.
