Hello everyone! I was wondering if there is a way to convert a family that was created in-place within a certain model to a regular, stand alone family that I can then use in other projects. Anyone have a suggestion? I got started creating something that got a little complicated and I would rather not try to reduplicate it again...but I guess I could if I had to! Thanks in advance, AJ

ajacobs, Try selecting your in place family, then selecting File > Save to Family Name your family and load into other projects. Let us know if this works.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I was unable to get this to work. When you click on the Save to Library -> Save Family... command, it brings up a save as box where you have to enter the name, file type, and then you select the Family to save. As far as I could tell, none of my in-place families were on the list. I tried several different things, even copying the family and then pasting into a blank generic model family file, but alas, to no avail!!! Also, was flopping through the user manual, and it says of in-place families, "The family exists only in this project and cannot be loaded into other projects." Its not the kiss of death, but it doesn't look good for me! But I will press on... AJ

You cannot save out an in-place family and reuse it in another project the only way to do that is by making the in-place family a group then save group and load to another project. Hope this helps.

We were told this could not be done but if you click on your family and do copy and paste by using control key copy (C)and control key paste (V) I have been successful. I have used Revit 9.1 and we are now on 2008. Barbara Bennett HagerSmith Design

The method suggested by HagerSmith worked fine (copy to and paste from clipboard). As for grouping and exporting, worked for some things, but not all. If anyone is interested, I've included 2 snapshots of one item that did not want to work with this method. "There is no Group that can be placed in the current view" error when trying to place it in any view. Maybe I screwed up when making it, I don't know. Newbie here thanks for the replies

Copy and paste would be my suggestion as well.

Best method is to edit the family in-place and select all geometry then paste into a new family...
