Why is it that when I asign a phase and then group and place that same group all the instances lose the phase that I have assigned them? Also when I select all instances of some objects I am unable to change the phase of that object overall. Any solutions?

because the grouped object or copied object will revert back to the phase of your view.... when picking all instances of one object you should be able to change phasing globaly, maybe some objects are locked or on another workset (?) if so, take control of all the worksets and than try to change...
