Hi, What is the best format to export 3d models out of Revit to another illustrator and maintain surface colors and hatch patterns? Exporting to dwg seems to lose the colors and hatch or maybe I am doing it incorrectly. Thanks in advance

What program are you trying to export to? If you're exporting to Viz or Max, you're correct to export as a 3D dwg. I'll assume that's the case for now, and that you're exporting to render the model. So why do you need surface patterns and hatches if you're going to be applying materials in another program?

Laurabh, Thanks for responding. The developer of a project has hired a third party illustrator to import my model, render it further I think) and include it on a website. I have requested the illustrator to let me know what software he will be using but I have not heard back yet. The goal, is to save expense and effort on the part of the illustrator as I have already included desirable colors and hatch patterns in my model. The illustrator will then be taking it another step further and adding trees, skys, etc. to dress up the model. As you probably know when I export to 3d dwf format the colors and patterns remain but not when I export to dwg format. Thanks,

You say you've chosen "desirable colors and hatch patterns" although when talking about acutal rendering (using the Rendering tab in Revit or exporting to another program) you'll be using "materials." In Revit, in the Materials Settings the material is under the AccuRender heading. At this point, none of this will matter to you, though, because the appearance of materials won't translate between programs. I've recently just completed my first Revit to VIZ render - with the VIZ end of it from a co-worker. Check out this post on the AUGI forums http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=51334 for more detail. Hope this helps. Laura

exporting to dwf is just a printing format. you can't transfer 3d modeling information that way. hatch patterns are for non rendered drawings. they pretty up your cd's. materials is what you are looking for. definitely export to dwg as this will retain your materials information. if your renderer is using an older version of max/vix, your materials won't come through. you need a newer version of max/viz which i believe was only 2 updates ago. other rendering software I'm unsure if the materials will be transferred.

Thanks for the help. I realize the difference between hatch/colors and materials but I was hoping that they could still be exported 3d like they are in dwf. Oh well!
