Good Morning,

Our firm has finally invested in Revit and I am in charge of "testing" revit to see if it will work for our firm.  Two questions: I set up electrical floor plans but cannot seem to get the can lights in the ceiling to show up on the plan.  The pendant lights are showing up fine. But no cans. Also, I'm using drafting lines to draw the electrical lines to the switches and such....is that correct?

Second Q: We have a brick wall with stone blocks on the corners of the building only.  Would you suggest I cut the profile of the brick and insert a mass in the voids?  I'm catching on quick but Revit is driving me up a wall right now any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Good morning and welcome to Revit.

The can lights should be ceiling based so you will need to have them on the ceiling plan (RCP) instead of the floor plan if that's what you have done. If you don't have a RCP, go to view, new, ceiling plan. They also will be needing a ceiling to attach to which I assume you have since the pendant lights are attaching.

Also, if you get an error message about the visibility of the object you will need to type VV or VG to bring up your visibility settings and check the electrical box. Shouldn't have to do this part though. Drafting lines are fine. I'm not sure if there's a better way to do it. I don't do many electrical plans.

I would say that you would want to make a wall based family that will cut your geometry for you. I'm guessing you are doing something like qoined corners?

And I assume you are coming from an AutoCAD like environment and yes, Revit will drive you nuts for awhile, but keep with it, it's worth it.

Ok, let me make sure I am understanding you correctly: should I be doing my electrical stuff on the RCP? I made a duplicate of my floor plans and changed the discipline to electrical.  Hm, so maybe I should make a duplicate of my rcp and make them electrical instead? Ok, I may have it. Thanks for responding so quickly.

OMG, I think I have messed you up! My apologies if I have. You should be able to make your lighting show up on any level really. However, you will need to take into account that your can lights, being on the ceiling will be a ceiling based electrical family therefore, these will (should) be waaaay above the cut plane, thus not showing up on your floor (electrical) plan.

There are many ways to workaround this so the lights will show up on your floor plan such as using your floor plan for electrical and RCP as an underlay and using the linework tool to draw your can lights on the floor plan. Then you can turn off the underlay.

Or, you can attach an invisible line on your can light family that transfers through the cut plane thus making it show up on your floor plan. You can use symbolic lines in your family to show up on your plan as a dashed line.

There are many ways to do this, I hope I haven't confused you more than helped. Let me know if this helps, I will try to straighten it out for you.

Ok, I understand.  I think, because of time constraints, it will be easier for me to just do the underlay and trace the lights.  Thanks for your advice, it was very helpful and much appreciated!
