I am new at teaching REVIT and am at the point where I would like students to add electrical symbols to their designs. I have tried to load for example .....the duplex outlet symbol. I then went to the symbol command and the only thing available is the North symbol. I tried the REVIT help command on this subject to no avail. Is there a simple way to load and use these symbol libraries please?

Depending on which family you used, it's probably a component that you actually place on the wall, which means you should go to the modeling tab and select "component".
