Hi. I've noticed that a solid element does not get "sliced" as expected when being viewed in plan. I have attached a small file to demonstrate. It's a very simple model, but if you view it at Level 1 or 2 you still see the horzontal beam. I would expcet to not see this beam as it is above level 2. Do I need to alter a setting?
Thanks.

I wonder if I made a mess of explaining the problem. This "no slice" behaviour only seems to happen with constructed solids. It doesn't happen with wall (as we know) nor structural columns.
I'm trying to construct my own steel work (portal frames) using sweeps etc. but can't generate the expected plan - Revit shows the whole portal frame at e.g. 1m above ground, rather than just showing a sectional view of the uprights.

You say you are doing this for structural purposes but the family is assigned to the mechanical category. If you switch it to Structural Framing it should cut more like I think you are expecting. Not all family types observe the cut plane the same way.

Thanks, I see what you mean. Is there a way of knowing in advance how a particular family template will behave?
Also, is it possible to switch an existing family to another type rather than having to remodel? My interest is in the UK_Portal_Frame which comes with Revit (not sure if it's only the UK version). I want this frame to be sliced in plan - the item in the library doesn't.

Yes and Yes,
To see what families will be cut in a project, open a project and go your visibiltiy/graphics settings. You will notice the line styles of the various categories. There is a cut and a projection column. Notice some are greyed out... These are the family types that will not cut.
To change a family category. Open the family.
Go to Settings-->Family Categories and Parameters-->Then select the family category you wish the family to be and save the family.
Cheers.
