Use groups but be carefull with them when it comes to any families that are surface mounted. Sometimes groups work perfectly and other times they are far from perfect, expecially when it comes to groups with ceilings and ceiling mounted objects.

GROUPS have worked very well for me, especially for repetitive units. Doing changes is very easy. But I must admit, that I had a few issues with wall mounted families, that happens when you change walls that have fixtures attached to a different thickness. There will be allways objects excluded from the group, a quick fix is to ungroup everything, delete the model group in your browser, then delete the "rebel" fixture, reinsert it on the new wall and regroup with the same name.

okay im digging this up to add some advice. I've done these sorts of projects and here it goes. 1. Make rooms groups. 2. any hosted families should also have their host located in the group. i.e. floor hosted toilets are bad because your floor is most likely not located within the group. wall mounted cabinets that are hosted by the wall are bad because if they are located on a demising wall or corridor wall the demising wall and corridor wall isn't in the group. this can cause problems with groups because if you edit the wall or floor (not in the group) it makes changes to the group and results in changes made to a group that didn't happen in group edit mode. bad. 3. objects excluded from group. right click and select restore all excluded. if the requirements for being there are met then the objects will return. you don't necessarily need to upgroup, delete, regroup etc.
