I downloaded the above Smoke Detector from this site and I can not get it to insert into my model. I have tried puting it into my model in the floor plan, ceiling plan, 3D, section and elevation.
Please let me know how to use this component.

I had no problem putting it on my model. Do you have a ceiling in your project? It most lilkely is set for a ceiling as host.

The bottom side of our floor truss system has Gyp. Bd. That is our ceiling.
Could you go throught the steps you went through to get it to insert into your model? There is no Host option with this detector.
Were you in a floor plan when you inserted it?
Thanks for your help!!!

I just loaded it into my model, then went to my ceiling plan and inserted it.
Is the layer of gypsum board in your model a ceiling? If not, I would try to make a ceiling type as just a single layer of gypsum board and place it in the room. Then you should be able to insert the smoke detector.

Exactly. When you make your floor to have layers of materials (ply on top and gyp bd on bottom) you are still making a floor as far as revit is concerned. You have to do what JHanby said. You need to make a ceiling that is the thickness of your gyp bd and place it....again, just like your floor system. I know, I hear you grumbling. I grumble on some things too.

You could also edit the smoke detector family to make it not ceiling dependant. You then insert it normally and put it at the right height from the floor (or ceiling, if you have the ceiling as a level)
