I'm looking for advice and opinions on how best to set up a set of files. The project I am working on is a set of two story condos linked into groups of four or five. While most of them remain the same as far as plan and wall location, each end unit has a different roof condition and end wall condition. How can I create the files so that the buildings will update with each other, but still give me the flexibility to alter a few minor things such as exterior stairs, end walls, roofs? Should each be a separate file linked into the site, or should they share a file with the walls grouped to relate, or should I actually create families of the parts I want to remain the same, allowing each condo to be a separate file using one family??? Any thoughts or discussion would be useful. Thanks!

Just a suggestion - not sure it works - but use the group command for items that are the same - I am un sure how the group command works thru linked files you may have to (when making changes to the group reload the group into the separate linked files - Groups are essentially copies so it there is anything that is going to change from condo to condo this will have to be created outside of the group. I know everyone is scared to use groups but it has improved dramatically - we have started to use them more but still on a limited basis (always take the host in the group for hosted objects). For linking files you need to consider how you are going to issue the drawings linked files have some limitations on the data that can be scheduled. I personally have not used linked files that much - I keep hearing they don't work as good as claim - My advice is to keep the set up of the project simple - keep it all in one file. If you are trying to limit the files size upgrade your computer - we work with some projects over 120mb and have no problems. If they get this big I would then consider using worksets (like they were intended). Hope this helps.
