I was just about to post my own question about printing and saw this post so I thought I would post here. I have not been able to get a handle on printing and was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some good reading/ reference material on printing in Revit. It seems so complicated to me. Thanks.

Hey...printing's not that tough.... Like what sort of printing are you having trouble with? Printing to a plotter, or PDF or like what? When in doubt always check out the Revit Help files and Revit tutorials...they are life savers sometimes.

Plotting in Revit is very similar to plotting in AutoCAD. The biggest differance is the Setup... button. This button takes you to a page that in itself is also very similar to AutoCAD. Why it is split into two differant screen instead of one like AutoCAD, I just don't understand. Personally I would like to see a lot of AutoCAD features more closely represented in Revit.
First things first. If you are printing just one sheet, then make sure that that sheet is the current window. If you are printing a list of sheets, then it doesn't matter which window is active.
Then click the print button. You will want to pick the right printer before you continue.
PRINT RANGE refers to what you intend to print. Pretty streight forward. 'Current Window' is just that. This is the one you would use for printing a single sheet. 'Visible portion of current window' is real handy for test plotting. 'Selected views/sheets' if you choose this one you will need to click the 'Select' button to pick which sheets to plot.
'Options' is self explanitory I hope.
Now, in the Settings heading, click Setup.
'Paper' this is where you setup the paper size. If your size is not available then you need to go back to the first page and into printer settings to see if the desired paper size is an option. I leave 'Source' set to default tray if its not greyed out.
Orientation shoulpd make easy sense.
'Paper Placement' I usually leave this set to Center. If it isn't landing in the center of your sheet you can try the Offset features to fix it.
'Zoom' Fit to page is not to scale. Zoom 100% is to scale. or Zoom 50% is half scale.
'Hidden Line Views' just leave it at Vector Processing. I'm not sure why you would check Raster.
'Appearance' Raster quality is all about the images you import or camputer, like renderings. I do High for stuff that is leaving the office, and a lower setting for drafts. 'Colors' Black lines are just that. If you want grayscale hatchs then set it to greyscale. I don't know if anyone uses color for their plans, but we don't.
'Options' I check everything, but 'View links in blue' Once it's on paper what does it matter where your links are?
If you like your settings then you can save them and give them a name to use later.
Then hit OK
If you are printing 'Current window' or 'Visible portion of current window' then you can preview. If you are printing'Selected' then you don't get an option for Previewing.
Hope this helps

Thanks ArchWestCY.
I don't like the fact that you cannot preview when you use the selected sheets. If you can preview the others why not the selected? Then when I use the current window one, the preview is skewed and it looks like the sheet is off the page but I hit the print button and it prints ok. I am using version 8.1 hopefully the upgrades will address this issue better.

lansk,
Could be one of two things:
1) Your printer is way old and needs to be replaced or have the memory upgraded (I doubt it's this one, but thought I should mention)
2) Your vector image is HUGE!!! Usually when the printer take so long it is because it is having to buffer a large image (this is why it takes longer to print coversheets with bitmap project maps).
Now, ways to solve it (assuming you're plotting from Revit):
1) Upgrade your printer (I doubt it's this one, but thought I should mention)
2) Reduce the size of the vector image
3) Under 'Setup' in the print dialogue box, you'll see an option for Rastor Processing or Vector Processing... try setting it to Vector Processing (It should already be set to that but just make sure it wasn't changed.)
Other than that I'm out of ideas. Have you tried printing to another computer or even to a PDF and printing the PDF?
pS: Thanks to everyone who hiJacked this thread and didn't actually try to answer lanskaja's question. Much obliged.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in asia, but only slightly less well known is this! Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! |

i have attached a document on getting large projects to print quicker.
i recomend using dwf its a lot quicker.
also a tip which isn't in my document and because most people still print from revit instead of dwf. when you select your printer go into the printer properties and change its setting to print at FAST or similar option, never print at best quality as this will make it very slow. the setting for your printer are much more important than the print settings inside revit for making very large projects print fast.

I'm alittle suprised that a vector is slow, atleast in comparison to raster images. Vector means that the program is using actual lines based on equations and information stored in the file, rather then raster which is based on pixels. Thats why Revit says that Vector is faster, because it keeps the information inherent in the file and doesnt have to create a snap shot image of the drawing before printing it. Thats why vector images are always sharper and crisper than raster images and why professionals use programs like Adobe Illustrator or Corel which are vector based programs.
In other words Vector = small and fast....Raster = large and slow....among other things...
I know that doesnt really answer the question, but just thought i'd throw it out there for people who don't understand the difference between Vector and Raster....
