well, seeing as scanned files can be jpg files.. the answer is yes. Some of them are photos of actual materials. Many of them also have transparency maps and such attached to them. So if you scan an image of a material in, yes, you can use it as a material. is this what you are asking?

Using maps is fairly easy, but how do I make a new material library. Is that a .mlib file. I have AutoCAD 2007 and it comes with hundreds of materials. Is there a way to make a revit material library with these materials in it, or should I just continue to apply them as maps? ArchWestCY

It appears manual unfortunately. I'd like to do the same. Under setting>materials click the arrow beside AccuRender then click the material menu and click new. Or you can use the user library when you make new materials to store in. I don't know of any batch program that will do this manually.
