I hope that I have not missed something in your question!!!!
I made a roof and then clicked the Plane-button
and I could pick a plane of the roof
then use Beam-Button on the Design Bar to place two beams in the roof
and rotate one of them in the plane of the roof
No problems but perhaps I have missed something in your question????
