I am trying to find the "right" notebook, I I am looking at P4 HT systems or AMD64. As far as I can tell, not much difference in performance... I am more concerned about longevity (3 years?). I am wondering if what other "ants" on the ant hill are thinking about best systems to run Revit .... thanks ... A worker ant.

I have Sony Vaio GRT270P. It is 1 year old 2.2 GHz P4 , 1 G Ram Nividia Ge Force 5600 . I debated about doing Revit on laptop, but this thing is awesome. I do everything on it and have never had any problems. It has a 16" ultra nice screen and that is what realy makes it work for rendering and Revit. Of course, you can probably get more for money now, but that's what I bought a year ago and have not outgrown it. It runs 3D Studio on it from time to time and it does fine. I love it. Now I can do Revit anywhere!

I have been using a 600 mhz Dell Inspiron, and had to give a "live" project introduction using Revit to view and rotate the building model..it was tediously slow. I am wondering if the Amd 64 chip will improve the throughput of Revit, or if Revit would take advantage of a 64 bit processer? Or if Revit will be using the 64 bit technology in the near future?

Just got a Sony Vaio A117S. 512MB (goes up to 1GB) 17" wide ultra high res screen and 1.7GHz Penium M. This has an equivalent power to a 2.5GHz P4 and has 1GB of cache. Its superb. Put this one on your list.

I don't know about how fast Revit would work on a Athlon 64 system exactly, but will be the fastest solution out there. Athlon 64's are the fastest processors available for business related computing. They will get faster as well, by that I mean that they are a 64 bit processor, but are currently only capable of running at 32 bits because of software limitations. When Windows XP 64-bit version comes out in 2005, the computer will get faster because windows is able to use the full capability of the 64-bit processor. There is another limitation as well. Revit would also need to come out with a 64-bit version. Test on beta versions of XP64 and 64-bit applications show from a 10-35% increase in speed depending on the application. In short, the Athlon 64's are fast now, and will get faster when 64-bit operating systems and programs come out. Or if you're running linux (which you're porbably not since Revit doesn't run there) there are already 64 bit versions of linux and some applications. Unreal Tournament 2004 64-bit comes to mind.

i have a Dell Inspiron 9300. 2 GB Ram and 2 Ghz Processor. it works like a champ. i can be running photoshop, AutoCAD and Revit all at once and experience no lag time. definitely spring for the 17" display though. i cant imagine running Revit on anything less than that. as is, it kills me when i go home and work on that after leaving my dual-monitors at work. hopefully my new 42" plasma will make things easier for me (during football season too!)

Not really going into to much by reading all the posts on this I would recomend getting a dual core CPU. I prefer AMD but an Intel runs just fine as well. A 64 bit CPU can run revit if you dont have a 64 bit O.S. running. Revit has neither a 64 bit compatible eddition or a eddition that can utilize multiple cores. The dual core is better because of back ground programs running such as a firewall, anti-virus, etc. I am running a Pentium D 3.4GHz and in larger projects it runs slow. Also a thing i found is if the Appearance Tab in the monitors Display Properties if you use windows classic revit will run a bit faster as well. I havnt seen anything on how Revit and HT works together. You say you are getting a laptop and I dont think you will be able to get a 3.4GHz chip in that...I would put your money to upgrade your CPU, 2GB of Ram is fine.
