I am working for a company and we are drawing a wrather large project with 4-6 people drawing on local files and saving periodically to a central file. Our desktop shouldn't be the problem with a gig of ram ram each and verfy fast processor too. My question is could it be that our server can't keep up or is revit just an awful program used in this way?

A gig or Ram is most likely your problem.
Personally I'd recommend 2 Gig of RAM minimum for revit.

what is your file size? that can also slow down the system. i agree with Mr. Spot. 2Gigs of RAM is preferrable. i have 2G Ram and 2G processor on my home laptop and it seems to work fine, and my desktop at work is even faster. the 1G machines i have worked on seem to lag. but check the file size too. as frequently discussed in these forums, if you are linking/importing in too many dwg files, or creating in-place families all over, it will increase file-size and thus limit productivity.

The file size is around 240 megs and our machine after checking them are 3 gig processors and have 2 gigs of ram. Do you thihnk it is because we have 4-6 people working on the project at the same time or a networking problem?

240MG's!!!
How big is the project in sq m?
That is huge. From previous projects i've done that would equate to a 300 unit, multi-res high rise development to get that big.
When a file size reaches this you really should be investigating why its this big and if the file has been modelled using best practices maybe there is an opportunity to split the file up and use links...
Reduce in-place families (if its used more than once its should be a proper family)
Purge unused families
Delete Unused Views (excess views explode file size)
Delete captured renderings where not needed
Delete walkthroughs where not needed
Don't overmodel things, if you are only going to see it in one view, it probably doesn't need to be modelled
Delete excess imported DWG's and try to use linking of Dwg's more (these are easier to remove from the project)
Delete excess 3D views
HTH.

It is a thirteen story casino with a very large area for the first floor and basement. the tower is about three hundred rooms. There aren'nt that many unused families in the project it is just that big. Another issue I thought of yesterday is that we all use dual core processors and it only looks like the revit is one core meaning I'm running a 1.5 gig processor with 2 gigs of ram according to revit. Can this be overcome?
