Good afternoon fellow reviters Smile I was wondering, has anyone ever tried exporting a model from Revit and importing it into 3D Studio Max? If so, which method did u use? DXF? anything else? Much obliged! Smile

Let me elaborate on this one.. I need an exporter or a method to export very object type from Revit to 3D Studio Max as 1 geometry. e.g. instead of exporting all the walls separately, I want them to export as 1 mesh. Can anyone help on that one? Smile

Dont know if this will help but I exported as a 3d dwg file then used then used the file link manager in max. Worked well  and was easy to assign new materials for fast render turn arround time however could not find a way to edit geometry after import so any design tweaking was tied to revit and then updating link. What is it for cause it sounds like a gaming workflow, if that is he case then try sketchup as its faster and optimised for that type of work.

Hope this helped

The prob with my suggestion is that you want it to be one single attached mesh....The file link does not allow conversion to pollymesh (from memory) so you cant attach the meshs as far as I am aware. It might work if you try importing into cad or sketchup etc then max...using the intermediate software as a filter to get rid of information from the file.........I tried exporting from max and re-importing back into max again from the file link stage discussed previously with no sucess as file co-ordinates got messed up.

let me know how you go and what you have tried so I can try n help more

this is a bit long but its part of a best practises for importing revit to max

Export Options for a 3ds Max Project1- Save As Type for 3ds MaxWhen exporting a view for use with 3ds Max, on the Export dialog, for Save As Type, select the most current version of the DWG file format. 3ds Max is designed to take full advantage of the information contained in a DWG file. You can also export DXF files for use in 3ds Max, but you may not achieve the same level of functionality or performance with these files. In addition, you can import a DXF file into 3ds Max, but you cannot link the file to incorporate later revisions. Whenever possible, it is recommended that you export Revit projects to DWG format for use in 3ds Max2-Layer Settings for 3ds MaxA layer mapping file maps Revit categories and subcategories to AutoCAD layers. When you import or link a DWG file to 3ds Max, you can select layers to turn off. This provides another way to limit the geometry contained in the model, and thus improve performance in 3ds Max.In addition, when linking a Revit-generated DWG file to 3ds Max, you can use the Derive By settings to convert layers into objects. You can then apply a material to an object and manipulate derived objects in other ways. For more information about Derive By settings, see the 3ds Max documentation3-Solids (3D views only) for 3ds MaxRecent enhancements to Revit Architecture and 3ds Max have improved performance and data size for both options: Export As Polymesh, and Export as ACIS Solids. For best results, however, it is recommended that you export as ACIS solids. This option helps avoid various issues you may experience when using polymeshes in 3ds Max.·         File export·         Cad formats·         Autocad 207·         Options·         Solids·         Export as ACIS solidIf you export geometry as ACIS solids, when importing (or linking) into 3ds Max you can use the Surface Deviation for 3D Solids setting to control the granularity of incoming geometry. See the 3ds Max documentation for details about this setting.NOTE:Elements with compound structures: If the model includes elements with multiple components (such as walls, floors, ceilings, and roofs), when you export to DWG using ACIS solids, each element is exported as a single solid. The export file does not retain information about the individual components that make up those elements or any material mapping that may be associated with those components. To retain surface material mappings with compound elements, export as polymesh. 4-Other Export Options for 3ds MaxTo set export options, on the Export dialog, click Options. Then on the Export Options dialog, use the options as follows:
  • Layers and properties: Use this setting to control how object style overrides are handled in the exported file.
  • Linetype scaling: This setting is primarily for export to AutoCAD. These settings are not used on import to 3ds Max.
  • Coordinate system basis: In most cases, specify Project Internal.
Select Shared Coordinates if the 3ds Max scene will include geometries from other sources, and you need to ensure that the models are located in the correct positions relative to one another..
  • One DWG Unit Is: Select the appropriate unit to reflect the units used in 3ds Max. In the 3ds Max File Link Manager, you can select Rescale and specify a value for Incoming File Units.

Steiner if you actually need as one mesh if linking the file you need to go to the file link manager (in max) and bind the file (the button is there just dig arround a bit) , once bound you can then select everything in the scene and right click, (opens the quad menue) and in the bottom right area you will find an option to convert to pollymesh, click it. Once everything is a pollymesh then select one of the bits ya want to connect and look in the modify pallet and click the attach button, now anything you click on will become part of the same "mesh" even if they dont physically touch.

Caution: Unless you know subobject modelling (box modelling) in max and am familiar with multi-subobject materials in max then this workflow may not be for you as your materials creation, mapping,  and application, will probably throw ya.
