Hi,

 I'm having the same problem here. I want to use concrete structural columns and beams inside the walls I put them there but they wont show up) and I also want to have columns with plaster finish.

First, to make a column visible that is hidden within a wall, use the "Unjoin Geometry" tool on the column to seperate it from the wall.

Second, to put plaster on a column, you may use one (or more) of the following options: 

1. Edit/duplicate the existing family and add the "plaster" layer to the model. (family modeling techniques required which I will not explain. There are pleanty of tutorials available)
2. Create a new wall type consisting of "plaster" only and surround the column with it. (This will require seperating the column from the wall as mensioned above.)
3. Just add detail lines around the column to represent a layer of plaster.
