Dear Friends,
I've seen this in other forums, but can't figure it out.
I make a wall-based light fixture - a Sconce. It has a "zero" level plane point, which when inserted into a project, becomes the elevation parameter.
However I don't want that - I want to make a separate dimension parameter from a reference plane (which in my case would be the bottom of the sconce itself) and dimension that height from the floor, and use THAT as my height instance parameter (NOT the elevation parameter).
But for some reason, that height parameter is not working for me. The only height parameter that works is the elevation parameter...
I read somewhere else that one has to "trick" the elevation with an invisible vertical line in the family, then do a dimension parameter from the floor reference level to the reference plane in question. It worked on one of my sconces, but not the other. And because of that I can't figure out what is going on.
Can anyone help with this please? Sconces are things I have to make very often, and would be really helpful to figure this issue out.
(If I am unclear, please let me know and I'll explain further)
Many thanks, dear friends!

You can accomplish this by adding a horizontal reference plane in elevation and aligning and locking it to the level line. Then set that reference plane as the origin. Next add your dimension parameter from this origin reference plane to the reference plane your family is aligned to.
The invisible line trick is used to make wall based families appear if they are not wihtin the view range. For example in floor plans most often the cut plane is at 4' but say for washroom accessories like paper towel dispensers they are mounted at 4' and so the view range does not cut the family and thus it does not show up. Add the invisible line and then no matter the height it will be cut and will appear.
